JIM ‘happy’ at Almeria display

Almeria boss Juan Ignacio Martinez declared himself happy with his players following the 1-1 Copa del Rey home draw with Getafe.

A Verza own goal on 22 minutes gave the Madrid side the lead at the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterraneos, the midfielder heading a Pedro Leon free-kick into his own net, only for the same player to make amends with an equaliser from the penalty spot just before the hour mark.

“It was hard to get into the match but I was happy with our performance, particularly after the break,” Martinez told a Press conference.

“Some of our players who don’t usually get minutes had to get used to the pace of the game. If we didn’t match Getafe’s competitiveness then we were going to pay for it.

“But in the second half we were better, more Almeria, and we could even have achieved a more favourable result.”

The former Real Valladolid and Levante boss, however, stressed his preference for a one-off game in the Cup as opposed to the two-leg system used up until the final.

“We should have a single game, with all the emotion that brings. If it’s decided over 90 minutes it makes you play with more spirit and there is less room for speculation,” he claimed.
