‘Negative Depor fans losing sanity’

Victor Fernandez has suggested that the negative Deportivo La Coruna fans are ‘losing their sanity’ following Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao.

The Galicians made it two wins in three matches thanks to Ivan Cavaleiro’s lone strike in the first half at Riazor, but the Coach lamented the continued presence of a ‘silent majority’ in the stands, despite the side climbing out of the relegation zone.

“When you win, you’re happy and satisfied. It was a good match on our part, and I appreciate the applause from the fans at the end, they were spectacular,” he said after the match.

“The team show an extraordinary attitude of commitment and devotion every day. We’re getting stronger at home and have beaten a Champions League team.

“Now, the fans must be proud of the group. Our strength is our close-knit group, commitment and sacrifice. If we don’t give more, it’s because they don’t have more to give.

“Deportivo gave the sense of an organised team. They were very aggressive and intense in applying pressure.

“However, it doesn’t help that there’s still a silent majority in the stands. Many people get on the boat and nobody should let it sink.

“I don’t know of any divisions which make you stronger. Instead they weaken you, and I don’t know if a solution will arrive or if [the negative fans] are losing their sanity.

"[Referring to his 200th win in La Liga], two hundred wins are great, and if I managed to achieve it with Depor and against Athletic then that's even more extraordinary, but I'm not interested in any individual issues.

“Neither did I care for my 100th win. What’s important is that Deportivo won.”
