Simeone slams Cerci conduct

Diego Simeone has slammed Alessio Cerci for the manner of his departure from Atletico Madrid. “I’ve never understood players who talk to the press.”

The forward – who has since returned to Italy with Milan on loan for the next 18 months – was vocal in his dissatisfaction with the lack of game time he had been afforded at the Vicente Calderon.

However, after Atleti kicked off the New Year with a 3-1 victory over Levante on Saturday, the Argentine made clear his frustrations with the conduct of his €20m summer purchase from Torino.

“I’ve never understood players who talk to the press,” Simeone said.

El Cholo then commended his troops for showing character during their win against the Valencians, singling out quartet Antoine Griezmann, Diego Godin, Arda Turan and Jose Maria Gimenez for praise.

“In the first half, the team responded [to my orders] very well, although [the scoreline] wasn’t as comfortable as we wanted it to be ahead of the restart,” he added.

“However, the team gave a very positive account of themselves early in the second half. Our opponents found a goal, but we broke back for 3-1.

“Hopefully the good atmosphere in the stands continues because the Atleti fans are known for their presence and support,” he added.

"I’ve recently said that Griezmann is growing a lot. I’m happy when he works like this and gives us joy with his goals.

“Hopefully Godin can continue the line of work he’s in at the moment because he’s important for us and we need him at this level.

“Arda showed his importance. Gimenez is responding to his call in the first team with good performances.

“Tomorrow we’ll prepare for the cup match against Real Madrid, but consequently we’ll have less time to focus on Barca.”
