Moyes fuels Gerrard-La Real links

David Moyes has opened the door to the idea of Real Sociedad signing Steven Gerrard. “If he ever wanted to come to play in Spain he knows he can phone me.”

The Liverpool midfielder announced on Friday that he would be leaving the Reds at the end of the season to pursue a career abroad before his retirement, and the Scot hinted he would love to bring the 34-year-old to San Sebastian.

“He has had a great career for his club and for England and he will be very difficult to replace. If he ever wanted to come to play in Spain he knows he can phone me,” he was quoted as saying by the English media.

Looking ahead to La Real’s visit of Barcelona in La Liga this weekend, Moyes commented that his players already showed him that they could beat the Catalan giants in training.

“My players have already shown that they can beat Barca. They’ve been the best team in the world for the past 10 years with the ball in their possession,” he added to Spanish journalists.

“We respect Barcelona because they’re a very good side, but when they arrive in San Sebastian, we must show that it’s not an easy place for them to come and win.

“I expect a good response from my players, who are very positive at the moment.

“[The recipe to minimise the contribution of Lionel Messi] is through the defensive work of the entire team.

“Barca are more than just Messi or any other star. They’re dangerous players, both collectively and individually. Any of their attackers can win the game for them.

“I have a list of transfer targets but won’t give names until anything’s confirmed.”
