Xavi ‘proud’ to represent Catalonia

Xavi Hernandez has spoken of his ‘pride’ at representing Catalonia ahead of their friendly with the Basque Country tonight.

The Barcelona midfielder is set to make his 11th appearance for the autonomous state – who are neither FIFA nor UEFA affiliated – at San Mames on Tuesday.

“Today is a celebratory day for us all. We all want to be here, and representing Catalonia is a source of pride," he told reporters.

"If I’m still active next year, I would like to play again for the Catalonia national team.”

The match will mark 100 years since the two regions’ first meeting, which ended 6-1 to the Basques.

Xavi aside, Coach Gerard Lopez has named eight other Barca personnel, including Martin Montoya, Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
