‘Miranda & Godin hugely influential’

Jose Maria Gimenez has paid tribute to Joao Miranda and Diego Godin following his transition into the Atletico Madrid first team this season.

The 19-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with Los Colchoneros after replacing Toby Alderweireld as the side’s third-choice centre-back, and he admits the influence of his fellow defenders has proved invaluable in his development.

“The year has been mostly positive for everything we’ve experienced, which was wins and more wins. I hope we can continue this streak [in 2015],” the Uruguayan was quoted as saying by Marca.

“We won both La Liga and the Super Cup and reached the Champions League final. It was a very complete year.

“Most of what happened to me was because I was next to two amazing defenders, who have always talked to me, taught me things and transmitted their experience to me.

“To me, Godin is both a reference and mirror. Miranda’s amazing and has great qualities. I’m grateful for everything they’ve done for me.

“We want to continue our good run. We’re a beautiful team who are committed to what we do and [achieving] what we want.

“Personally, I want to continue growing, play more minutes and try to exploit [any first-team opportunities].”
