‘Patience key to beating Elche’

Javi Gracia praised his Malaga players for refusing to hit the panic button during their 2-1 win at Elche on Sunday.

The Andalucians suffered a hammer blow on the cusp of half-time when David Lomban fired the hosts into the lead but they scored twice after the break to turn the match around in their favour, and the Coach was impressed by his side's ability to remain calm under pressure.

"It was a hard-fought game by both teams. In the first half, we had some chances to take the lead, but they did not materialise," he told assembled journalists after the game.

"Our opponents pressed us from the first minute to the last. They searched and found their goal in the latter stages of the first half, which hurt us.

"[Lomban's goal] was a dubious foul, and I'm not sure if it was offside or not, but what's important is that we recovered from this setback and pursued our initial style of play.

"In the second half we showed patience, which is what led us to the win today and where we are in the table. We have to move forward.

"We've managed eight wins in our last 10 League matches, the last five being victories. We are in a privileged position and must enjoy it to the fullest.

"The team worked hard like they've done all season. We have a good squad, and it's important that everyone gets involved because they must really show what they're about when they're called upon.

"They have the option of doing so because there's great competition [throughout the squad]. In the case of Luis Alberto, he's now proved what a good player he is."
