‘Espanyol fought like animals’

Sergio Gonzalez hailed his Espanyol players for 'fighting like animals' following Saturday's 3-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano.

The Catalan outfit picked up their first away win of the season at Vallecas, and the Coach struggled to contain himself as he highlighted the sheer importance of the three points after the match.

"It always seems fair when you win. We fought like animals against Rayo, and it was important to win. The players emptied themselves, and I think we were fair winners," he mused to reporters.

"We won and we appreciate this victory. I'm very happy, the players deserved it and the three points are good for us.

"Rayo are always a tough team to face. They play very good football and are known to make teams suffer.

"The dressing room's very happy with the win, and it's also important for continuity. The team never give up. We've demonstrated our commitment and that we sacrifice every last drop of sweat.

"Rayo played [3-5-2] the other day, so it allowed us to work on a few things. It's a very risky style of play, but [Paco Jemez] deserves praise for trying to implement it."
