‘Deportivo a team on the rise’

Victor Fernandez believes Deportivo La Coruna are primed for bigger and better things but need more goals to realise their potential.

Deportivo on Sunday travel to Villarreal in their last League game of 2014 and the Coach told a pre-match Press conference that a win at El Madrigal would set the team up for the rest of the campaign.

“As for our play and the sensations we are a team on the rise,” Fernandez said, according to AS.

“On Monday [against Elche] we played well and we won because we are on a clearly upward trend with more opportunities, but we find it hard to score. That must be tested against Villarreal.

“What gives confidence are the results. We have to keep playing with confidence, playing well and boldly.

“It would be fantastic to win. We realise that it’s difficult but we have options. It’s 11 against 11. It’s the last game of the year and it seems everything is calming down at all levels and we’ll see if we have good news to close the month.

“I only ask for the New Year that injuries respect us, players come back in good health and they’re recovered.

“That would make a good gift for the start of the year. In addition, the President is making great efforts to complete the team and not be exposed to misfortunes.”

Fernandez also commended Sunday’s opponents, both the style of play preferred by the Yellow Submarine and the approach of his counterpart Marcelino.

“They’re one of the most attractive teams in the League. They’re talented on the pitch with very fast transitions and very direct in everything they do,” he acknowledged.

“They’re in three competitions with possibilities in all of them. They have a large squad, with alternatives, and a Coach who knows how to play and they’re a good team to look at.”
