Milan goalkeeper Diego Lopez has revealed why he left Real Madrid to join the Italian giants this summer.
The 33-year-old joined Los Blancos from Sevilla in January 2013 for €3.5m, but has admitted the signing of Keylor Navas caused him to consider his future at the Santiago Bernabeu and was the main reason for him leaving.
“The situation at Madrid was not easy to manage,” said Lopez in an interview with Tuttosport.
“While the issue with me and Iker Casillas was sustainable, when the club signed Keylor I realised that my circumstances had changed and had worsened.
“I spoke with [Carlo] Ancelotti and goalkeeping Coach Villiam Vecchi and they helped me make the correct decision, speaking highly of Milan and the club’s history.
“It was an important opportunity for me and one I had to take. Vecchi told me Milan had wanted me back in 2005 and had watched several of my DVD’s,” he revealed.
Lopez has an agreement with the Serie A outfit until June 2018 and says he is happy with life in Milan.
“I’m fine here and it’s a new experience for me. I’m at a well-organised club and it’s the ideal environment.
“However, what I least like about Italian football is the absence of people in the stands. In Spain, England and Germany the atmosphere is much better.
“Apart from that I love everything about Italy,” he maintained.
