Jemez: Rayo played four officials

Rayo Vallecano boss Paco Jemez attacked the performance of the match officials in his team’s 4-4 Copa del Rey draw at Valencia.

A pulsating second-leg game at the Mestalla saw Nuno Espirito Santo’s men go through 6-5 on aggregate after twice coming back from a two-goal deficit.

Spain striker Paco Alcacer opened the scoring early on before Rayo came back with goals from Jozabed, Alejandro Pozuelo and Jonathan Pereira before half-time.

A Jorge Morcillo own goal just after the break narrowed the deficit, only for Adri to put Rayo ahead on the hour mark. Alcacer then got his second of the evening on 65 minutes before Rodrigo completed the comeback five minutes later.

Rodrigo then received a straight red card for kicking out at an opponent eight minutes from time, yet despite his team’s contribution to an unforgettable game Jemez could not hide his annoyance at the way they exited the competition.

“Congratulations to Valencia for going through. We played against a great team, a great support and four officials,” he told reporters post-match.

“A referee can always be wrong but today he was wrong a lot of times and that crushed us. For me to speak about a referee then he must have been really bad.

“But I must give my team even more credit because we had to fight against everything.

“You couldn’t have placed more obstacles in the way to make this match even more difficult,” he fumed.
