Athletic seal Europa League place

Mikel San Jose and Markel Susaeta scored as Athletic Bilbao ended their Champions League campaign with victory over BATE Borisov.

The 2-0 win means Los Leones will compete in the Europa League when European competition resumes, having gone into the final match day unable to catch either Shakhtar Donetsk or Porto.

San Jose scored shortly after the start of the second half and Susaeta doubled the lead late on after Mikel Rico, Ander Iturraspe, Oscar de Marcos and Guillermo all went close in the first half.

Athletic had the best part of 30 attempts on goal throughout the 90 minutes in what proved to be a comprehensive win after a disappointing experience in Group H.

BATE had some half-chances but the win was in the end straightforward for Ernesto Valverde’s side.
