Jemez proud despite defeat

Paco Jemez believes Rayo Vallecano deserved more than a 1-2 defeat from their Copa del Rey game against Valencia.

Rayo were leading until the final stage of the game, when a mistake by goalkeeper David Cobeno allowed Paco Alcacer to equaliser before Rodrigo de Paul scored the game-winning goal.

“I am very proud of our work and the performance of the players who don’t play often,” he said, AS reports.

“As a team we have given a good account and made it difficult for them as they don’t deserve the result. It is what it is. The players have done very well but we have to congratulate Valencia.

“We came here to win two games and we’ve done enough for a better result, but the circumstances are what they are.

“The tie is difficult and very complicated. We won’t give anything away. We have to score two goals against a team like Valencia and that won’t be easy.

“Football is about details. We don’t blame Cobeno because the only ones who make mistakes are the ones who are there.

“It was unfortunate and that goal gave them the chance to get back in the game. I told Cobeno to keep his head up, that we all make mistakes.

“Nobody will criticise him because it’s part of the game. You have to accept it and that’s it.”
