Emery ‘excited’ by Copa del Rey

Unai Emery says he is excited by this season’s Copa del Rey after watching his Sevilla team demolish Sabadell 5-1 at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

The Andalusians were already 6-1 up from the first-leg against the Catalan minnows, yet despite fielding a team containing several youngsters made no mistake to move comfortably into the next round.

“The Cup excites us and the team’s mentality is good ahead of a competition where our destiny is in our own hands.

“However, we need to be careful as we know it is a difficult one to win, but the Sevilla fans again have dreams and hopes for this season,” he told reporters post-match.

Emery was loathe to single out any one particular player for praise, despite fine personal performances from Jose Antonio Reyes and hat-trick hero Iago Aspas.

“It’s good there is competition within the team. It’s a long season and we hope to be in three competitions with a chance in each of them right until the end.

“The young players will also have a role to play, while some of participated already and others made their debuts tonight.

“It was difficult to fill the stadium, given the result from the first leg, but we wanted to play for something, not only to get through to the next stage.

“It wasn’t a big crowd but I think our obligation was to excite those that did come. I hope there are more here in the next round,” he concluded.
