Depor tie still wide open says Gracia

Malaga boss Javi Gracia insisted the Copa del Rey tie with Deportivo la Coruna is far from over following the 1-1 draw at Riazor.

Ignacio Camacho’s early header gave the Andalusians the advantage only for Toche to level things midway through the second half.

Nonetheless, despite the Andalusians now being favourites to progress, Gracia feels it is far from a foregone conclusion and there is still everything to play for.

“We wanted to win and try to take an important step towards the next round, but the tie is still open,” Gracia told a Press conference.

“A scoring draw is better than a goalless draw, so that’s one step, and I think we did well.

“We might have sealed things if we’d have been a bit better on the counter-attack, but our opponents also had their chances.”

The two sides meet again in La Liga this Saturday and Gracia wants his team to get back on track following two successive defeats.

“On Saturday we are hoping to win but if you ask [Deportivo Coach] Victor Fernandez he’ll also tell you that.

“We had five consecutive victories but then lost to Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, so we want to get back to obtaining points, although we know it’s not going to be easy at Riazor.”

Gracia said he understood what Deportivo are going through as a club after the death of one of their supporters in violent clashes with Atletico Madrid fans last weekend.

“I sympathise with them. I hope such events don’t happen again and I wish Depor all the best,” he asserted.
