Canales ‘confident’ for Oviedo

Real Sociedad midfielder Sergio Canales believes a win against Real Oviedo in the Copa del Rey is vital to maintain confidence.

Canales has been in the starting line-up for both of David Moyes’ first two games in charge, against Deportivo la Coruna and Elche, and is hoping the first-leg clash at the Nuevo Carlos Tartiere will be another stepping stone on the team’s road to recovery, following a poor start to the season.

“Both myself and the team need to take confidence from winning and if the group progresses then you do so individually,” Canales told a Press conference.

“We’ve taken seven points from the last three League games and that has given us more confidence, although there are still a lot of things we need to improve upon.

“In football it is very important to keep a clean sheet, even more so after we conceded in 11 consecutive games.

“Letting your opponents score first is something that always causes you problems and we’ve improved on that.

“We kept our goal intact at Riazor and also against Elche and we needed those results, although they were not the best games.”

Asked about the causes of the collective improvement, Canales admitted that the change of Coach has brought about different training methods.

“The sessions are different under Moyes and the players are looking forward to games, more so now than before, and we needed three or four good results to get back the confidence we had lost.

“I hope these results are going to be a turning point,” he added.
