Emery: Self-esteem is restored

Unai Emery proclaimed how Sevilla's self-esteem was restored thanks to their 5-1 victory over Granada on Sunday.

The Andalucians had lost their last two matches but bounced back against their local rivals in style, and the Coach was keen to emphasise his side’s strength of character, while singling out the contributions of Jose Antonio Reyes and Gerard Deulofeu.

"I'm happy with the performance and the team because it raises the self-esteem of the entire squad," he told reporters after the game.

"The team were strong and confident. We endured strange sensations in our last matches and got no points, so we needed to raise the self-esteem of the team and especially reach 26 points.

"The collective and the individual are all one. I'm glad that everyone can contribute, but they need to work hard in training and play through the bad times.

"Jose Reyes is one of them. He reacted well [to being benched] as captain.

"With Deulofeu, we are convinced that he is a work in process. He needs to invest in hard work, perseverance and consistency.

"He offers us something, but he can give us a lot more.

"Rotation benefits us rather than harms us. There are three competitions – La Liga, the Europa League and Copa del Rey.

"We intend to be at a high level for all of them. That's why the changes and performances are sought.

Emery then offered his condolences to the unnamed fan who was tragically killed prior to Atletico Madrid's match with Deportivo.

"It leaves us all feeling strange. We had to detach ourselves [from the tragedy] to focus on the game," he continued.

"Football is a game, and we mustn't forget that. It should serve to unite us. I send my condolences to family of the deceased fan."
