‘I wasn’t rubbish & I’m not a phenomenon’

Iker Casillas gave an honest assessment of himself following Real Madrid's win over Malaga. "I wasn’t rubbish before and I'm not a phenomenon now."

Los Blancos earned a record-breaking 16th straight victory on Saturday, against Malaga, and while the goalkeeper hailed his teammates for their run, he was quick to emphasise the fickle nature of football having been both criticised and praised in equal measure.

"I wasn’t rubbish before and I'm not a phenomenon now," he told reporters after the match.

"It's the Coach's decision [to play me]. I respect Keylor [Navas]. He deserves to play and deserves opportunities. He's a great professional and teammate.

"Then there's Pacheco. If he ever takes goal for Madrid, he'd do as well as us.

"We told the Coach [that we'd do it] and now we've entered Madrid's history. It makes us happy.

"We're even happier for the fans, who have seen 16 straight wins from their team, and hopefully there'll be many more.

"We participated in a serious match, which was end-to-end. We had chances, but Kameni was sensational.

"Malaga had theirs too, but we defended well. We suffered a bit but we're very happy with the three points.

"However, if at the end of the season we don't do well, the rest is useless.

Casillas then joined his Madrid colleagues in backing Cristiano Ronaldo to defend his Ballon d'Or title.

"I've done my vote. I can make it public if you want?" questioned the custodian.

"For me Cristiano is the best. We are with him to death, he gives us so much and we must use him for the good of Real Madrid."
