Weligton hopeful of Madrid off day

Malaga defender Weligton feels his team must be at their best and Real Madrid have an off day when the teams meet at La Rosaleda on Saturday.

Brazilian centre-back Weligton saw Malaga’s five-game winning run come to an end with the 3-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid at the weekend, but is hoping Javi Gracia’s men can take something positive from the Madrid clash.

“This is the best Real Madrid team of recent years,” asserted Weligton at a Malaga football forum organised by AS newspaper, which was also attended by Gracia, midfielder Ignacio Camacho and chief executive Vicente Casado.

“The only way to stop them is to play very well, do what the Coach asks us, then see if some of their best players are not at their best.

“We will get one or two chances and hopefully we’ll be able to take them.”

Weligton went on to praise the impact some of Malaga’s youngsters have had this season after being promoted to the first team squad, yet sounded a note of caution with regards the future.

“It’s always good to see the youngsters coming through and bringing something to the team.

“I thought the Coach might have been a little afraid of putting so many of them into the side but the results are the best thing that has happened.

“Therefore, it’s people like me, with more experience, who have to put the brake on them and make them realise they haven’t done anything yet,” he warned.
