Xavi: I wish I’d played with Scholes

Xavi Hernandez has revealed that he would have loved to have played alongside Manchester United legend Paul Scholes.

Barcelona midfielder Xavi believes that when Scholes was at his peak he was the best in his position in the world, while he feels that among today’s players Lionel Messi deserves that accolade.

“I’d have loved to have played with Scholes. He played the game the way it should be played and at his peak he was the best midfield player in the world,” remarked Xavi in comments reported by the Daily Record.

“However, I don’t think it could ever have happened because his love and loyalty for United was the same as mine for Barcelona.

“But right now Messi is the best, the best there has ever been, and over the last 10 years he

has been superior to any other player on the planet.

“All the players at Barcelona are used to playing with great players for club and country, yet even the best sometimes had to stand back in amazement during training at what he was capable of doing.”

Xavi considers a lot of the credit for the Catalans producing Messi and such a glittering array of talent over the years must go the club’s famed La Masia academy.

“I’ve played in some great Barcelona teams with some great players so much of the credit has to go to La Masia.

“Of course, they teach us the Barcelona philosophy of playing but it is so much more than that. They also teach you how to be a good person and a good man.

“All of Barcelona’s recent success would not have been possible without all the people at La Masia.”
