Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Miguel Angel Moya has offered his backing to Real Madrid counterpart Iker Casillas.

Moya has spoken to Canal+ and the discussion turned to his opposite number at Santiago Bernabeu, as well as the injured Victor Valdes.

“Valdes was one of the top three in the world when he was injured,” Moya said, AS reports.

“I know him and I wish him well. Valdes’ situation makes you learn that in football, the fall from the top to the bottom can be very fast.”

On Casillas, Moya compared the Madrid and Spain captain with the likes of Steven Gerrard and Francesco Totti, one-club men better appreciated than the goalkeeper, he suggested.

“Totti and Gerrard are legends in their team. Casillas has had a lifetime at Madrid,” he noted.

“He has achieved a lot for both the national team and his club. It seems ironic that we are a country in which there are people who rejoice in schadenfreude.

“If he does well, he doesn’t get applauded, he just doesn’t get whistled. Casillas is an emblem of his team and isn’t a hopeless case.

“There are even times his failures are invented. The goal Tiago scored in the League match this season at the Bernabeu, that wasn’t Casillas’ fault.”
