Legend Mario Kempes praises Valencia

Valencia legend Mario Kempes has praised his former club’s fine start to the season but warned they must take things step-by-step.

The Argentine, 60, played for Los Che in two spells between 1977 and 1984 and has been impressed at the way in which his old team has responded this season, particularly after the disappointment of last term.

“With all the problems they experienced last year, nobody could have imagined they would be competing so well this season,” he told AS.

“They have a great Coach and some quality players so this is their time to shine as the fans are really on their side, but that’s as far as I’d go.

“They need to keep things in perspective and quash any talk of winning League titles. They must progress slowly because I still see them as being behind the big two.

“Both are very strong and powerful, although right now I feel Real Madrid are the stronger, but I wouldn’t underestimate Barcelona who also have some great players.”

Kempes, who recently underwent open heart surgery, also had special words for Valencia boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

“To be honest I knew nothing of him before he joined Valencia but I’ve been impressed with him. From what I can see the players have deposited a great deal of trust in him.

“I like the team with Feghouli and Piatti playing on the wings and Gomes in the centre,” he asserted.
