Messi hits back at World Cup critics

Lionel Messi has replied to critics of his performances at the World Cup in Brazil last summer, when he was named the tournament’s best player.

The choice did not go down well in some quarters, with many fans feeling the award should have gone to Colombia midfielder James Rodriguez.

However, Messi has sent a message to those who felt he did not deserve the accolade.

“If I’d scored in the final then they’d have said I’d had a fantastic World Cup,” insisted the Argentine in an interview with Ole newspaper.

The Barcelona star saw his hopes of a winners’ medal dashed in the final when Germany’s Mario Gotze netted the only goal of the game in extra-time, becoming the first substitute to score a World Cup-winning goal.
