Hannover forward Joselu feels he's a victim of a problem faced by many Spain players plying their trade abroad and has no chance of an international call.
Joselu left Real Madrid for the Bundesliga in 2011, first with Hoffenheim, then a loan spell at Eintracht Frankfurt before a permanent move to Hannover in summer 2014.
The 24-year-old, who came through the ranks at Celta Vigo before moving to RM Castilla, represented Spain at youth level but despite scoring goals in Germany, isn’t in the senior international picture.
While Joselu is encouraged to see a number of new faces recognised by Vicente del Bosque, he has told Marca that no one playing outside La Liga can expect to be drafted in.
“I’m enjoying the renewal in the national team. There are a lot of young players who are getting opportunities and we have to go for new people,” he said.
“There are also other players doing well outside Spain but they’re not getting their chance.
“Diego Costa is the No.1 Spain striker and now entering are [Paco] Alcacer, [Alvaro] Morata, Rodrigo [Moreno], and Munir [El Haddadi].
“And there are other strikers who have not had a chance, without belittling those there now. It is a bit annoying.
“Honestly, there are players outside Spain who could go to the national team but don’t because they don’t play for a big team. We’re remote and less seen.
“In Germany there are Spanish players who are of the level of the national team.”
Joselu stressed he wasn’t necessarily referring only to himself, pointing to Gladbach’s Alvaro Dominguez.
“He is skilled enough to be on the Spain team. He’s having a great season, his team are third in the Bundesliga and he’s a starter in the League and in Europe,” Joselu noted.
“His level is unbelievable, equal or better to the defenders who have been called up. For statistics, he is perfect.”
