Manquillo enjoying Liverpool spell

Javi Manquillo says he is enjoying his spell at Liverpool, as he believes the move is proving to be a fundamental learning curve.

The right-back joined the Reds on a two-year loan deal from Atletico Madrid in the summer and has since gone on to become a frequent starter for the Premier League club.

Reflecting on his first few months at Anfield in an interview with AS, the 20-year-old explained what he hopes to achieve.

“My objective here was to become a better player, and I'm getting [the necessary games],” he said.

“[I chose Liverpool] because they're a big club like Atleti, they've won five European Cups, they're an institution of European football and a member of one of the best leagues in the world.

“I came here knowing what they had. [Glen] Johnson's one of the world's best, but Atleti and I decided it was best for me, as I needed to play.

“Here you have the pressure of playing for a big team with expectations, and that helps you mature. It’s not easy, but my [personal] expectations are being met.

“I'm adapting. It's one of the hardest things to do, but I have help. Jose Enrique and Suso are some of my guides here. The Spanish players get together often and we spend our afternoons together.

“Gerrard's a legend here, and as each day passes by, you realise why. He helps a lot and is a great person. People have enormous respect for him.

“You can't describe Anfield. You must come to see it. To be on the pitch and hear the crowd is amazing. It gave me goosebumps the first time.”

Manquillo also believes that Liverpool’s slow start to the season, with the team off the pace behind League leaders Chelsea, will be put right.

“I don't think there is a problem. The results will come because we're working well,” he argued.

“There are many new players, but it's no excuse. We will be at the level that Liverpool demands soon. [My targets?] Play better and collectively, and win a title."
