Cristiano: No Ballon d’Or obsession

Cristiano Ronaldo has once again insisted he isn’t obsessed by winning the Ballon d’Or after becoming the record European Championship scorer.

Ronaldo’s goal for Portugal against Armenia was his 23rd in qualifying and tournaments, taking him past Jon Dahl Tomasson and Hakan Sukur.

Speaking to reporters after the match, the Real Madrid forward was asked about the match, the record, the Ballon d’Or and the prospect of facing Lionel Messi’s Argentina in a friendly at Old Trafford next week.

“It’s a friendly. If it was for the World Cup it would be special, but a friendly counts for nothing,” he said, AS reports.

“It will be special to return to Old Trafford.

“I knew what I had to do and I did it. I’ve won major trophies and set records in other competitions. I’m in pole position but I’m not going to obsess over the Ballon d’Or.

“The Coaches and the captains will vote and I’m calm about it.

“I knew sooner or later I’d set the record. Armenia put two buses in our area and tried to take advantage of our mistakes.”
