‘The Spain of the past won’t return’

Santi Cazorla has asked that this current Spain side not be compared with Spain sides of the past as there is no turning back the clock.

Cazorla is part of the squad to play Belarus and Germany and was on the fringes of the side that won the World Cup and two European Championships.

The end of the international careers of Xabi Alonso and Xavi Hernandez have brought down the curtain on that generation of La Roja, however, and Cazorla wants Spain to have the room to regrow.

“Don’t compare. I know it’s inevitable but the Spain of the past won’t return,” the Arsenal midfielder said, Marca reports.

“Now the aim should be to play well and regain the feelings of a team. There is a change and we must all be patient.

“There were great players. We’re another Spain than the one that won it all and it’s complicated.”

Regarding his individual situation, Cazorla confirmed he hopes to have a regular place under Vicente del Bosque and touched on his club future too.

“I’m ready to play, to give everything from the first minute. There is quality and I want the fans to know that,” he said.

“It’s time to step up and improve things. The first thing to do is win against Belarus and try to be as calm as possible.

“Arsenal are a work in progress. Strange things happen and we are too inconsistent. We can’t afford situations like those we experienced in recent games.

“Returning to Spain? It’s clear that one day I’d like to. I have another season on my Arsenal contract so right now I haven’t planned anything.”
