United weight up Atleti defender bid

Manchester United are contemplating a bid for Atletico Madrid defender Miranda in an attempt to solve their defensive crisis.

The 30-year-old Brazilian, signed from Sao Paolo in July 2011, has been in impressive form for Diego Simeone’s team since then and, according to reports in Spain, Reds’ boss Louis van Gaal sees him as the centre-back he has desperately been searching for to shore up his leaky defence.

The Old Trafford outfit has never fully recovered from the loss of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand over the summer and are understood to have had several other targets lined up, including Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and Ron Vlaar of Aston Villa.

However, it now appears United are set to make a determined effort to land Miranda in the January transfer market and will put an opening €25m offer on the table.

Miranda has made over 100 La Liga appearances for Los Rojiblancos, where he has added La Liga, the Europa League, a Copa del Rey, a Supercopa de Espana and a European Super Cup to the three League titles he won in Brazil.
