Weligton plays down Malaga ambitions

Malaga central defender Weligton has urged caution after seeing Los Blanquiazules move up to sixth place in the table.

The Costa del Sol outfit overcame a gritty Eibar last Saturday to record a fifth success victory, equalling the club’s top-flight record set under former boss Manuel Pellegrini, but Weligton says it is too early to be talking of a European spot at the end of the season.

“We know this League very well and there will be a lot of twists and turns along the way,” noted the Brazilian at a Press conference.

“One day you can be close to Europe and five games later be near the bottom, so we’ll just carry on with the same humility we’ve always shown.

“Nobody expected us to achieve five consecutive wins but that’s a product of all the work and dedication we’ve put in.

“All the teams in this division, except for the top three, would have settled for 21 points at this stage.”

The experienced 35-year-old, however, is aware of the dangers of over-confidence.

“There are examples of teams that have finished the first half of the season with 20-odd points and eventually struggled to avoid relegation.

“Having said that, if we are still up there in February or March why can’t we dream of something more?” he asked.
