Santana: Win for players & fans

Real Sociedad caretaker Coach Asier Santana has dedicated the win over Atletico Madrid to the players and the supporters.

La Real came from behind to depose the champions in what is to be Santana’s only game in charge, the reserve team boss stepping in to the breach after Jagoba Arrasate left his post.

A full-time replacement for Arrasate is expected to be named soon, with David Moyes and Pepe Mel the candidates for the vacancy, and Santana said after the match that the experience was a memorable one.

“It’s clear. I’ve fulfilled the task for this week and tomorrow I train with the B team having done my duty for La Real,” he said, AS reports.

“The feeling is the same for all levels but this is the first team and when you feel the support of the fans, I can’t explain what it’s like.

“We’ve gotten a lot out of the game. The players worked during the week and provided us with what happened today. I’m very happy.

“The victory is for the players and the fans, who were amazing. We’ve had bad times and they supported us without hesitation. We should be very proud of this team.”

Explaining why his team started slowly, Santana suggested that the poor form of recent weeks was a factor.

“I think we started with doubts and that cost us. We wanted to go forward and play in the opponent’s half,” he added.

“The players demonstrated their quality, they’ve gone above their level and have been rewarded with victory.”
