‘Cordoba need a Messi or CR7’

Miroslav Djukic rued Cordoba’s failure to break down Deportivo La Coruna, jokingly suggesting his side ‘lacked a Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo’.

Los Califas were unfortunate to secure anything beyond a 0-0 draw with their fellow Primera new boys, but Djukic was nonetheless enthused with the control that they commanded over their opponents.

“We made a great effort but without any reward to show for it, because we lacked composure in the final third,” the former Yugoslavia defender told reporters after the match.

“We were well drilled, because we didn’t let our opponents create anything. Still, we failed to be successful [in front of goal].

"Further work [is needed], but we have good character and are still in the mix [to avoid relegation]. The victories come when things are done well.

"We’re eager to get that win. With everyone [on our side], we can pull off [the escape]. The team did many good things, they just need some reassurance.

“We don’t have a Cristiano or Messi to solve our problems, otherwise we wouldn’t have been nervous throughout November.”
