Marcelino rues ‘absurd’ mistakes

Villarreal Coach Marcelino has described mistakes made by his team in their Europa League defeat to Zurich as ‘absurd.’

The Yellow Submarine were beaten 3-2 despite twice taking the lead in Switzerland and speaking to reporters after the final whistle, Marcelino was heavily critical of the team’s defending.

“It was a sad game. The team lost the defensive safety they have had for a while,” he lamented, AS reports.

“Mistakes were repeated, some of them were absurd, and we have to start working hard to correct this trend.

“Conceding three goals and especially conceding them as we did makes it impossible to win.”

Villarreal have now suffered three straight defeats and Marcelino suggested fixing the problems in defence will arrest the slide.

“We can’t look away. This is the reality. The team is vulnerable and it’s greatly complicating the results,” he continued.

“I worry about the defensive work of the whole team. We have little intensity trying to win back the ball.

“There are players who disregard the defensive side and then means the ball gets into our area easily and from there, there are problems.”
