‘Europa League special to Sevilla’

Sevilla Coach Unai Emery believes his club are excited by the Europa League after recording a 3-1 win over Standard Liege.

Los Rojiblancos are the defending Europa League holders and are two points clear of Feyenoord at the top of Group G.

Goals from Kevin Gameiro, a Jose Antonio Reyes stunner and a late Carlos Bacca effort confirmed a comfortable victory and speaking after the match, Emery confirmed he was pleased by the match and the campaign so far.

“I said the group would be very tight. Standard have improved a lot,” he said, AS reports.

“They had gone four games without conceding and created a lot of danger. We had to respect them a lot.

“We’ve done enough to earn a 3-1 win. There was great pace to the game and intensity. We prioritised the team and individuals contributed as well.

“The Europa League is something special to Sevilla because the competition excites us. I’m satisfied to have seen a high performance from this team.”

Asked specifically about Reyes, who captained the side, scored, but was later withdrawn due to injury, Emery praised the veteran and played down any injury concerns.

“Whenever Reyes plays his virtues are above his flaws and that’s what we saw today,” the Coach continued.

“All the players are consistent but in Reyes’ case it’s like he’s 20-years-old. We’ve seen a great Reyes. We’re waiting for the medical assessment but it doesn’t seem too bad.”
