Kempes: Ronaldo hungrier than Messi

Legendary Argentine striker Mario Kempes insists the difference between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi at the moment is hunger.

The 60-year-old, who had two spells with Valencia in the early eighties before joining Hercules, feels the Portuguese is getting better with age while Messi appears to be well below his best.

“You’ve got to acknowledge that Cristiano is getting better all the time,” said Kempes in an interview with ‘El Partido de las 12’.

“Ronaldo is like wine in that the older it is the better it is, while Messi is playing one or two gears below what he normally does, which is unfortunate for his club.

“I don’t see the killer instinct that he’s shown on other occasions. The difference between him and Ronaldo is that Cristiano is still hungry to stay amongst the elite and win the Ballon d’Or.”

In addition, Kempes believes Real Madrid are one step ahead of Barcelona this season.

“These are two institutions that must be respected but I see Barca a step below. In the main I see a stronger Madrid, although I think that football always brings you joy and can spring surprises.

“Why can La Liga not be a championship of five teams?” he asked.
