Ancelotti showcases quality and depth

In the build-up to Tuesday night’s game, the focus switched to Brendan Rodgers and his decision to rotate and rest several key players. Whether or not that decision is successful remains to be seen this weekend, but for Carlo Ancelotti it was another opportunity to showcase the strength in depth at his disposal.

With the impressive form of Isco in recent games, the Spaniard continued in the starting line-up with Gareth Bale being forced to settle for a place on the bench on his return from injury.

The 22-year-old has been instrumental in a six-game winning streak in all competitions, as he has an ability to combine his intricate offensive play with a tireless attitude which enables him to contribute more defensively.

His movement and vision were integral in the build-up to Karim Benzema’s strike to win the game, while he never stopped running and continuously put pressure on the Liverpool midfield when in possession.

Isco has great technique, touch, passing and an ability to score goals, but while Madrid concede less with him in the side they also score less, as difficult as that is to believe based on their recent results.

However, while the debate rages on regarding whether Isco or Bale should start, Ancelotti will arguably be looking at the situation and be delighted with the fact that he has world-class options.

The Italian tactician has the complete faith of the club, players and supporters at this stage with talk of a contract extension in the offing. As a result, it would be no surprise if he found a new balancing act through the remainder of the season which in turn delivered further silverware.

It could be said that the opposition will also dictate his selections moving forward, with Isco potentially a ‘safer’ option if Ancelotti is seeking additional defensive solidity and shape. However, Bale proved last season how devastating he can be in certain situations, and both players will undoubtedly get opportunities for the rest of the season.

Further, perhaps it isn’t even a straight duel between the pair as proved on Tuesday night. Bale replaced James Rodriguez in the second-half against Liverpool, and both the Welshman and Isco have proven that they can co-exist in the same team previously.

James’ attitude in his post-game interview arguably provided all the answers that those outside the club needed to know. The Colombian international insisted that “nobody gets angry” about being replaced and ultimately the players “listen to what Ancelotti wants”.

The fact remains that Ancelotti’s track record proves that he is a winner and he will deliver further success to the club in the coming years. As a player, that perhaps answers all the questions that they have regarding his decisions, and while every individual wants to play, the bigger picture dictates that rotation will be key.

Based on Tuesday night’s performance, Isco remains a fundamental part of Ancelotti’s system and approach. However, it would come as no surprise if the Italian finds a new balance which consistently sees Bale and Isco appear side-by-side at some stage as the team continues to evolve.
