‘Atleti got half of Costa money’

Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo has said he wouldn’t sell Diego Costa today as it wasn’t a good deal for the team.

Costa left Atletico for Chelsea over the summer in a deal said to be worth around €32m. But AS reports Cerezo claiming the Blues took advantage of the situation.

“He is one of the best strikers in the world. His departure was hastened because we had a weak moment in which we couldn’t say no,” Cerezo said.

“If it was to happen now, he wouldn’t go. The economic issue hasn’t been good for us as we got 50% of what was said.

“It was more about money for him.”

Cerezo also reflected on Sergio Aguero and Fernando Torres, lamenting the way in which Aguero quit for Manchester City and discussing the chances of Torres returning to Vicente Calderon.

“Aguero could have left as an idol but left in a silly way,” he recalled.

“I don’t know if we’ll try to sign Torres. We know he feels Atletico, as he has said himself.”

On the controversy surrounding the LFP awards, in which the champions were largely overlooked for prizes, Cerezo called for a change in the voting process.

“It’s unusual that a team that was champions and had seven players in the LFP team doesn’t get more than one award,” he noted.

“The LFP is a serious institution and there should be a system of accuracy for the voting.”
