Espanyol ‘surprised’ by Elche

Espanyol Coach Sergio has revealed he was caught unawares by Elche’s approach in their Sunday meeting.

Elche took a 2-1 win from match with a Jonathas brace, Christian Stuani netting a late penalty for the visitors, and Sergio said after the match that Espanyol were slow to get going.

“We started very cold and Elche were keen to win,” he noted, Marca reports.

“The goal from Stuani was key but getting a second was very difficult. We had chances but didn’t score.

“The truth is the opponent was better than us. We were very slow, especially for 20 minutes of the second half.

“It was an important game for Elche and they surprised us with their direct football. They played with a knife between their teeth and deserved it.

“For them, this victory is a turning point.”

The game also saw Sergio Garcia return to action and Sergio gave an update on the striker’s situation.

“He’s had a serious injury and could only play 60 minutes, in which time he gave everything,” the Coach said.

“We took him off as a precaution.”
