Emery: Motivation turned to anxiety

Unai Emery believes Sevilla were so motivated to beat Athletic Bilbao that they crossed the line into anxious.

A win for Los Rojiblancos at San Mames would have put them top of the League but instead an early Aritz Aduriz goal was enough to give Los Leones three points.

Emery told reporters after the final whistle that it’s possible his players wanted the win a little too much.

“Perhaps the motivation was so high that at some points in the game it turned into anxiety and we couldn’t get control to do things better,” he suggested, AS reports.

“I’ve no reason to criticise the attitude but the execution wasn’t at the level as in other games.

“Athletic got a lot out of a little but they were very demanding. My team’s attitude was clear. We had to have heart but also mental balance and we couldn’t control the game for 90 minutes.”
