Valverde wants Athletic win streak

Ernesto Valverde has called on Athletic Bilbao to go on a winning streak after snapping their nine-game winless run.

Athletic last week dispatched Almeria to record a first victory in nine games and the Coach has told a Press conference prior to playing Sevilla that it is vital Los Leones capitalise on their upturn in form.

“Victories always give reassurance to everyone, regardless of how they come,” he said, AS reports.

“That’s what it’s given to us. We broke a losing streak that had gone on for a while and we’ve had a week where this game hasn’t appeared so hard.

“I don’t know the statistics about playing Sevilla. I rely on what happened last week. We came to win. We were on a losing streak and now I expect a positive start and not to lose.

“I refer to last year’s statistics and I know that we won an important game and that while the situation is different, our intention is the same.

“Let’s take this opportunity to continue adding points and build a winning streak, as before there negativity at the club.”

Valverde did warn, however, that simply getting a win over Almeria isn’t enough to save their season and no one should be getting ahead of themselves, but shouldn’t be too down on Athletic either.

“The result calms everything. We criticise ourselves and I am the first to do so, but let’s not forget, we went through weeks where we did nothing wrong but didn’t win,” he added.

“Then everything was fatal. Now we’ve gone well we won’t say anything is fatal, we get champagne and streamers because we won.

“There are things to correct. We should be able to play better, of that there is no doubt.

“We get so much ink when we don’t win, but play a good match and we get a tiny tribute. We weren’t setting off fireworks after our last game.

“We won and we broke the streak. We won’t beat ourselves up when we lose or when we win.”
