Mathieu ‘surprised to play left-back’

Jeremy Mathieu has revealed he was surprised to be put at left-back as Barcelona lost to Real Madrid but deferred to Luis Enrique.

Mathieu started on the left of the defence with Jordi Alba on the bench, despite the Frenchman having been used almost exclusively as a centre-back since moving to Barca from Valencia.

“I was surprised to play left-back, but the Coach decides,” Sport reports Mathieu telling French radio.

“I also think it would be a shame for Luis Suarez to play on the wing. He was born to be a striker.

“I thought we did well in the match but we were exposed to the counter-attack, which is Madrid’s great strength.

“And it’s true, the second goal really hurt us. Even though we have big players like [Gerard] Pique, Sergio Busquets or myself, we still have problems with set-pieces. We have to work harder.

“I’ve no doubt about this team and what we can do. We have great players.

“I think I’m at the peak of my career, having joined Barca and got into the France squad. Before, I used to watch El Clasico on TV, now I play in it.”
