Gil: Valencia aiming for CL place

Midfielder Carles Gil insists Valencia should not settle for anything less than a Champions League place this season.

Los Che take on Elche at Mestalla this weekend and will be looking to get the disastrous 3-0 defeat to strugglers Deportivo la Coruna in their last fixture out of their system.

“We have to win any match at Mestalla to meet our goal of qualifying for a Champions League place, no matter which team we play,” he told a Press conference.

“At home we must become very strong and it’s logical our Coach says we cannot afford to lose two consecutive games, although we don’t feel under any pressure.

“There is a lot of expectation placed on us and we’ll be going all out for the three points.”

Gil, who spent two seasons on loan at Elche, admitted he would have ‘a divided heart’ but says his obligation is to ensure Valencia win the game.

“Elche is a team for which I have a lot of affection and many of my former teammates are still there, but I’ll be trying, if selected, to give everything for my team to win.

“Our objective is clear and that is to get into the Champions League because that is where we belong.

“We don’t like to talk about what might happen, but if you take things game by game then that’s the best way to get what you want,” he concluded.
