Griezmann ‘needed’ Atletico goal

Antoine Griezmann admitted he was relieved to score his second Atletico Madrid goal in the rout of Malmo.

The champions put five past their Swedish counterparts in the Champions League meeting and when celebrating his contribution, Griezmann ran to the touchline and embraced Diego Simeone.

Simeone had called for Griezmann to find his scoring form and speaking after the match, Griezmann agreed a goal was long overdue, having not scored since mid-September.

When the goal finally came it wasn’t the cleanest, taking a huge deflection, looping into the air and dipping under the crossbar, but he also hit the woodwork in the first half.

“Actually, I needed a game like that and a goal,” he confirmed, AS reports.

“It’s a shame about the shot in the first half that hit the bar but we’ve achieved an important victory, we have six points and we have to keep improving.

“At first we played pretty football and we put in crosses. In the second half we started combining more and we were able to get through the defence.

“We’re top with Olympiacos but we have to keep the same, with the same intensity. We’ve taken an important step with this win.”
