Jose Luis Mendilibar has said his farewells to the Levante players and staff following his dismissal on Monday night.
Mendilibar, who lost his job after just one win in eight games, visited the club’s Ciudad Deportiva de Bunol training headquarters, where he later spoke to waiting journalists.
“The feeling here has never been good as we weren’t able to call on some important members of the squad for a long time,” he lamented.
“I’m sure we’ve done a few things wrong and some players haven’t understood what I wanted from them.
“But above all it was the results that counted, something that for the previous four years this club has not had a problem with.”
The 53-year-old admitted that he did not expect to lose his job so soon after the 5-0 home defeat to Real Madrid at the weekend.
“I didn’t feel the Madrid game was going to be my last. I was sure we would sort things out and everything would be fine, but for the President it’s something new to be in this type of situation.
“I was getting ready to take training one minute and didn’t think I’d end up not being the Levante Coach at the end of the day,” he conceded.
Los Granotes have moved quickly to appoint his successor, confirming that former Granada boss Lucas Alcaraz has now taken over the reins at the Ciutat de Valencia.
