Rodgers: We’ll be up for Madrid test

Brendan Rodgers believes his Liverpool players will rise to the occasion when they come up against Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

Speaking at a Press conference ahead of the Champions League group game at Anfield, Rodgers conceded his side had been below par so far this season, but feels they are ready to test themselves against the European Champions.

“We understand this is a very important game for us and a great challenge, yet the good thing about this group is that we really lift ourselves for big games.

“Of course, we haven’t reached last season’s levels but this is a special game and a special competition for us, and I’m very confident that our team will rise to the standard of playing against an outstanding Real Madrid side.”

The Reds boss acknowledged the threat posed by Cristiano Ronaldo, but said he also expects his own players to cause Carlo Ancelotti’s men problems.

“Of course Ronaldo is a special talent, arguably the best player in world. His evolution from a soloist who scores goals into a goalscorer within the team is there to see over the last few years, and his record is incredible.

“We have to plan to make sure we cause Real Madrid problems first, then of course you prepare for the quality players that they have.

“That will be as a team, and something we will be focused on,” said Rodgers
