Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert believes the fans at Anfield can play an integral part in his team overcoming Real Madrid on Wednesday.
Lambert, signed from Southampton in the summer but a lifelong Liverpool fan, feels there are two reasons not to fear the reigning European Champions – the players alongside him and the supporters.
“This is Liverpool Football Club and this is where we are supposed to be,” he told the club’s official website ahead of the Champions League group game.
“We’ve been away from the competition for a few years but the squad definitely feels at home on nights such as this. Games don’t come any bigger than against Real Madrid.
“However, on our day we can beat anyone, especially at home. When the fans are in full voice, which I know they will be, we’re unstoppable at times.”
Lambert, a local lad who knows what it is like to sample the Anfield atmosphere as a supporter, is aware of the sheer volume a full house can generate.
“It doesn’t matter who the opposition is, it will be very hard to take points from us. When they are on song the fans can lift the team more than any other supporters.
“I’ve seen close up what they can do and what level they can raise the players to. If they can do that again it’s only going to help us and will lift us that extra five or 10 per cent, which might win us the game.
“It affects the team massively and also the opposition. I can’t describe it, but it raises your game and gives you that bit extra.
“The fans just make that little bit of difference,” he added.
