Mendilibar loses job at Levante

Levante boss Jose Luis Mendilibar has paid the price for Levante’s poor start to the season by being fired on Monday night.

The 53-year-old was given the news by club President Quico Catalan after a lengthy board meeting at the Ciutat de Valencia and became the second La Liga boss to lose his job this term, following Albert Ferrer’s sacking by Cordoba earlier in the day.

Los Granotes are currently second bottom of the table, having won just once in their opening eight League fixtures, and have conceded 20 goals whilst also failing to score at home in their four matches to date.

Although the former Athletic Bilbao, Real Valladolid and Osasuna Coach was told last week that the game with Real Madrid at the weekend would not influence any decision, it appears the team’s disappointing display in the 5-0 defeat finally counted against him.

Superdeporte reports that the early favourite to replace Mendilibar is former Granada boss Lucas Alcaraz, who steered the Andalusians to top-flight safety in two consecutive seasons before leaving last May.
