‘Atletico play to win’

Arda Turan has defended Atletico Madrid’s style of play, arguing that what matters is they win more than other teams.

Atletico have been criticised for their approach with some rivals complaining they are violent on the pitch.

Turan has told an interview that Atletico have to play to their strengths, and as they don’t have a Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, have to do things differently.

“Maybe our game isn’t pretty but we win,” he said, AS reports.

“Sometimes teams playing very well don’t win games or trophies. Of course, sometimes we’d like more of the ball.

“But we don’t have a Messi or a Ronaldo so we have to be a team and work hard. This is the style that has made us champions.

“I respect all opinions and I like the style of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, for example, but I like ours.

“Our recipe for every game is: work, work and more work. Every game for us is a final and we have to concentrate on each opponent.

“Barcelona and Real Madrid have more money and more quality than us but with the mentality of game by game and acting together as a team, we can compete with them.”
