Mario: Atleti need open play goals

Mario Suarez has warned Atletico Madrid can’t rely on scoring from set-pieces forever as their opponents will find a way to stop them.

The champions got two more from dead balls in the 2-0 win over Espanyol, Tiago Mendes netting the first before Mario got on the score sheet.

Atletico were therefore back to winning ways at the first opportunity, having lost 3-1 to Valencia in their last League game, prior to the international break.

“We suffered in Valencia but the team has showed character,” he said, according to AS.

“We won today and now we think about the Champions League. We have to keep going.

“We’re not thinking about Barcelona or Real Madrid. We looked at ourselves. If we keep doing the right things then we’ll get the positives.”

The midfielder believes though that for Atletico to thrive, it has to click for the team in regular play.

“The set-pieces are good and we work hard on them,” he considered.

“They bear fruit but we have to score from open play as our opponents will get to know what we’re doing.”

On a personal note, Mario admitted he was pleased to get some playing time, having largely been on the sidelines this season.

“I’m lacking a bit of rhythm. I don’t expect to play every minute so every game is important to me,” he conceded.

“The goal came from [Jose] Gimenez, who had a great game.

“We got a win that gives us peace of mind and we’re very happy, for the win and for our fans.”
