‘Atletico need goals from Griezmann’

Diego Simeone wants to see Antoine Griezmann get on the score sheet after praising his performance in Atletico Madrid’s win over Espanyol.

The champions were 2-0 winners at Vicente Calderon through goals from Tiago Mendes and Mario Suarez, but Griezmann was lively after entering the match on the hour mark.

Simeone was impressed by the France international but believes he has more to offer.

“He played well. He had great pace and was very mobile,” Simeone said, according to AS.

“Griezmann went between the lines to give us something different and went close to scoring.

“With the intensity he had today and the way he played the other day, he’ll create chances.

“We need goals from Griezmann and he’s working on it.”

Simeone added that the performance from Atletico was, to his mind, neither good nor bad, just what it needed to be.

“We played the game we had to play. Almost all of it was in the opponent’s half,” he argued.

“Raul Jimenez and Mario Mandzukic had time to get their positions and we had control on the right side with Juanfran and Arda Turan.

“We had to be patient and the goal came.

“Our domination in the second half was even greater. Even though we couldn’t get another goal we handled the game and we were stronger in the second half.

“Today the team attacked well and the hardest thing to do when you attack is to defend. It means we can play more in the opposition’s half.”
