Lionel Messi has been left out of the Spanish League’s (LFP) nominations for the Best Striker of the 2013-14 season award.

The Barcelona star was omitted from the three-man list comprising of Diego Costa, Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Vela, despite scoring more goals than two of the nominees.

Messi managed to notch 28 goals last term, one more than Atletico Madrid’s Costa and 12 more than Real Sociedad’s Vela, and was just three goals short of Ronaldo total of 31, which handed the Real Madrid striker the Pichichi trophy.

In Vela’s case, the Mexican international had his best-ever La Liga season last year, scoring 16 goals in 37 appearances, while Costa’s contribution helped earn him a big-money move to Chelsea in the summer.

Messi is the current holder of the award, having won the accolade in 2013 after plundering 46 League goals.
